They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and that seems to be the case for many of our custom home clients. As part of our occasional look at some of new home features we are asked about most often, today’s blog will discuss spacious breakfast areas.
The breakfast nook has been a popular home feature for decades. The word “nook” refers to a secluded corner of a room or a space that is tucked away and somewhat self contained. A common breakfast nook layout in older homes included either a restaurant-style booth and table setup for four people, or a small bistro style table and chairs.
Our clients often ask about roomy breakfast areas that will accommodate larger groups of people and still be convenient to the kitchen. For some families, that means a large enough island in the kitchen to have designated seating for the entire family plus a few guests. Other clients want an expanded nook area with large windows that can fit a farmhouse style table and a combination of benches and chairs.
It’s easy to see why an open, spacious breakfast area has appeal — imagine holiday mornings, overnight guests, or kid sleepovers, and having the elbow room to deliver made-to-order pancakes, waffles, or other morning favorites to a large group.
Of course, the breakfast room can be used all day for different meals. But there is something about a leisurely family breakfast in an elegant, comfortable space that makes everyday living feel extra special.
